The Nikon FM series was launched as an affordable alternative to its bigger brother, the F2. However, the FM was embraced by professional photographers because of its exceptional build quality. The body is made out of a special copper-aluminium alloy which is very rugged and wear proof. Because of its durability and mechanical prowess the FM body was used for almost 30 years with slight variations for the different later versions of the FM model. The camera can be used without batteries which is great when the battery unexpectedly runs out. However without battery the light meter is not operational making it harder to get a proper exposure.
This camera is best suited for more seasoned beginners and experienced analog photographers alike. Although the camera has a good working light meter the camera is fully manual. This means that the user has to combine the shutter speed and aperture to get a proper exposure. This requires a little bit more knowledge of photography than a total beginner would have.
The lens on this model is the 28mm f/3.5 Nikkor-H. This wide lens is great for street and landscape photography and can be used for portrait work if the subject is placed in an environment. Also this lens is great for use in tight spaces such as crowded rooms.
