This back was made for instant pack film. This enabled the photographer to see what the shot would look like before shooting it on his film. Very handy considering there is no playback option on analog cameras!
In the past photographers used the instant film in order to check their exposures. There were no screens they could use to check out how their lighting would influence their images. A polaroid would be used to give a general idea of how the images would turn out. Today they are used less as a way to test an image and are used for their characteristic look.
Today the cassettes still work perfectly fine. They are look nice cosmetically speaking and technically they still work perfectly fine. Getting film is a bit harder nowadays but there are still plenty of offers on Ebay.
The instant film vibe is really sought after and with this attachment you can get that look with all the benefits the Mamiya RB system has to offer.
