The Nikon FE is made to be an advanced semi-professional SLR. It was designed and constructed in Japan from 1978 up until 1983. It was succeeded by the FE2 and later the FM series. The FE was remarkably long lived and was massively produces for the amateur and prosumer market. The ease of use and durability were a couple of the reasons the Nikon FE did so well on the market. Furthermore, the F-mount it uses makes it possible to use almost all of the Nikon glass. So even if the camera someone used was not professional the lenses they bought could certainly be. This made sure that even amateur photographers could take amazing images.
The Nikon glass is known to be superb. All of their lenses are good, no matter how ‘professional’. Because so many lenses were made it is quite possible to find good quality ones to mix and match on your F-mount bodies. Your creativity is the only thing holding you back!
