Nikon F3 AF + AF-Nikkor 80mm ƒ/2.8 details

The Nikon F3 was Nikon’s third generation professional SLR camera. Following its predecessors, the F and F2 Nikon bodies, the F3 was the first of its kind that used batteries. At first this deterred professionals to purchase the F3, however after the body was put through its trials it earned many photographers trust. This is proven by the length of time the camera was in production. Whilst it was being superseded by two other cameras it remained ini production. The Body was first introduced in 1980 and was in production till 2000. The reason for its popularity was the quality of the build and the ruggedness the camera has. It would simply not break like other SLR’s would.

The Nikon F3 is either manually operated or set to aperture priority mode. In this mode the operator sets the aperture and camera chooses the proper shutter speed for a well exposed image. When the camera is set to manual the photographer has full reign and sets the aperture as well as the shutter speed.

This, however, is the F3AF and if fully specced out, and when we say fully we mean fully. Lets start with the huge viewfinder; the AF finder DX-1 enables for autofocus. The camera searches for contrast and focusses the lens accordingly to make tack sharp images. The viewfinder also shows the settings the camera is set to, and what settings are needed for a proper exposure.

The back of the camera is fitted with a MF-18 data back. This enables the camera to imprint information on the negative in between shot, thus not affecting images. Also the user can set manual ISO see what image they are on and give the command to roll the film back when used in combination with the MD-4 motor drive.

Continuing with the motor drive, this F3AF is fitted with one. The drive advances the film every time a shot is taken and can be used in continuous mode. When used in continuous mode the camera can produce 6 frames per second. Of course this sounds ridiculous with the price of film these days but the satisfaction you get when holding the shutter down is amazing.

This camera is best suited for someone that really loves analog photography and needs a professional grade camera. This marvel of science is truly a charm to use. It gives you the feeling that you are using a proper digital camera but in an analog body.
